A shout out to those who are passionate about sustainable practices and the work done in reducing our carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint. One of the largest areas of impact and where we can also make innovative improvements is in design, materials and construction. This article is particularly intended for sustainability leaders in the building industry, that by some estimates, constitute approximately 40% of all greenhouse emissions.

Earth Day, a day to celebrate for what we are doing to improve the environment, and a day to sound the alarm bells. There are really great efforts going on today in reducing CO2 emissions to slow the effects of climate change. There are individuals and organizations who are either affecting change for the better or working on innovations that can improve the environment. One of great importance is the act re-greening of the planet and planting trees, which in some cases can completely change people’s lives and take many out of poverty, such as dealing with the devastating effects of encroaching desertification in the Sahel region of Africa. The result of clear cutting of forest areas replacing natural habitats of old growth for economic gain combined with record forest fires bring tremendous need for replanting of trees.
